About the Blog
Welcome to 1001 Things You Didn't Know about the 20th Century....and a brief explanation why I decided to start it.
Recently, I found myself explaining things to friends about artifacts of the 20th Century--such as why the song "Baby, It's Cold Outside" isn't about someone avoiding rape but about flirting, the overwelming presence of the KKK in the 1920s, and what it was like to be a teen ager in the 1970s.
I do this sort of thing often enough that I thought, Hey, why not start a blog! You know, as something of a public service. Because lord knows there's so much that people don't know about the 20th century that affects us every day. Whether it's in our politics or in our entertainment; our music, our fashion or our food, it's all been shaped by what came before the Internet, in the 20th Century.
In fact, the Internet itself was shaped by events of the 20th century (but I won't get into that now.)
Since I will be at this for five days a week for the next 2 plus years (yes, I intend on doing this for the full 1001 days) please feel free to suggest a topic or a person, or a happening that you'd like to know more about. I'll be glad to research it and post about it here.
This blog's title is a bit of 20th Century trivia, too. During the Recession of the 70s, My Dad worked at 1001 Auto Parts on Rt. 18 in East Brunswick, NJ. It was one of many jobs he would have before landing a security position at Middlesex General Hospital, now Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick I looked for a picture of that store sign, as it had a lamp with a genii rising out of it--a real bit of NJ kitsch-- but couldn't find it. Instead, here's an ad for Taylor Pork Roll, another New Jersey Original....
